McKellen explained that he was wearing a fat suit to play the character Falstaff when he fell from the stage during a fight scene in the play Player Kings. Despite the scary fall, he credited the fat suit for saving him from even worse injuries, including his ribs and other joints.
In an interview with Saga magazine, targeted at older readers, McKellen shared the details of the fall, describing how his foot got caught in a chair and he started sliding on newspaper scattered on the stage, ultimately ending up in the lap of someone in the front row.
