Shakira Opens Up About Life After Split from Gerard Piqué: “Now I’m Free”
Three-time Grammy Award-winning artist Shakira is embracing a new chapter in her life after her split from longtime boyfriend Gerard Piqué. The singer recently released her 12th studio album, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” and is focusing on her career with newfound freedom.
In a candid interview with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show,” Shakira revealed how her split from Piqué has allowed her to fully immerse herself in her music. “I’ve been putting out music here and there, but it was really hard for me to put together a body of work. I didn’t have time. It was the husband factor. Now I’m husband-less. Yeah, the husband was dragging me down. Now I’m free. Now I can actually work,” she shared.
The album’s title, which translates to “Women no longer cry,” reflects Shakira’s empowerment and resilience in the face of adversity. She explained, “For too long we have been sent to cry with a script in our hands and without an end just because we are women. We have to conceal our pain in front of our kids, in front of society.”
Shakira and Piqué first split in 2022 after 11 years together, and they share two sons, Milan and Sasha. Despite the challenges she has faced, Shakira remains optimistic about the future. “I was transforming pain and anger and frustration into creativity, productivity, strength and resilience …. the resilience of a diamond, you know? So that’s why I picked the metaphor of the precious stones, because of the resilience that us women have today when we have to face adversity,” she said.
While Shakira is unsure if she will find love again, she is prioritizing friendship and the support of her loved ones. “I love love, but I think I even love friendship a little bit more. Because I thought love would be there forever for me. And that’s one of my, you know, broken dreams. Perhaps I will. I don’t know if I’ll like find that again. Probably not. Well, I don’t know. But friendship, I have,” she shared.
As Shakira continues to navigate this new chapter in her life, she remains grateful for the support of her friends and the opportunity to focus on her music and career.
