Selkie, a brand known for its whimsical and feminine cottagecore aesthetic, is making waves in the fashion world by expanding into swimwear. The brand, which gained popularity for its Puff Dress in 2019, is now offering a range of bikinis and one-pieces that stay true to its ethereal and nostalgic style.
Founder Kimberley Gordon wanted to bring the same sense of femininity and size inclusivity that the Puff Dress offered to the swimwear line. Drawing inspiration from past decades, particularly the 1930s through the 1950s, the swimwear features patterns like toile, gingham, and banana plaid, reminiscent of the brand’s signature look.
Head designer Justine Babb explained that the swim line was designed to feel like putting on a Selkie dress, but for the pool. With fanciful elements like ruching, ribbon ties, and ruffle trims, the swimwear aims to capture the same dreamy and romantic feel as the brand’s dresses.
While some fans were initially unsure if Selkie’s fairy-tale inspired aesthetic would translate to swimwear, others like Camryn Garrett and Sophie Desmond are excited to see the brand expand into new territory. Garrett, a freelance writer, was drawn to Selkie for its plus-size dresses and is curious to see how the brand approaches swimwear. Desmond, a freelance editor, believes that the swimwear will resonate with those looking to reclaim a bit of girlhood, especially millennials in their 30s.
With prices ranging from $90 to $225, Selkie’s swimwear collection offers a unique and nostalgic take on beach and pool attire, bringing a touch of cottagecore charm to the water’s edge.
