Beloved Radio 3 Presenter Sean Rafferty to Leave After 28 Years
After nearly three decades at the helm of BBC Radio 3’s flagship programme In Tune, Sean Rafferty has announced his departure, set for next April. The Northern Irish broadcaster, who was adopted as a child, has become a familiar and cherished voice on the station since he first presented the show in 1997.
Rafferty’s departure marks the end of an era for the programme, known for its mix of interviews, live performances, and classical repertoire. He will be succeeded by Petroc Trelawny, currently the voice of BBC Radio 3’s breakfast show, who will take over alongside co-presenter Katie Derham.
In a statement, Rafferty expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to host the show, saying he will “truly miss” the experience of sharing music with listeners at home. Throughout his career, Rafferty has interviewed a wide range of world-class musicians, from Yo Yo Ma to Cecilia Bartoli, and has been recognized for his deep knowledge and passion for classical music.
Rafferty’s warmth and humanity on the airwaves have endeared him to listeners over the years, earning him the title of radio presenter of the year at the 2004 Broadcasting Press Guild Awards and an MBE in 2017 for services to Broadcasting. His departure will undoubtedly leave a void in the world of classical music broadcasting, but his legacy will live on through the many artists he has championed and the listeners he has inspired.
