Sailing Enthusiasts Flock to New York City for Thrilling SailGP Finals
On a scorching Sunday morning in New York City, a group of sailing enthusiasts clad in polo shirts and summer dresses boarded a ferry to Governors Island to witness the exhilarating finals of the New York Sail Grand Prix. The event, part of the growing international sailing competition known as SailGP, featured F50 catamarans racing at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour against the stunning backdrop of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
Founded in 2018 by tech billionaire Larry Ellison and five-time America’s Cup Winner Russell Coutts, SailGP aims to create a mainstream sailing league with events held around the world throughout the year. The competition has been likened to Formula 1 racing on water, attracting millions of viewers and boasting state-of-the-art catamarans and Olympic sailors.
The sold-out race at the tip of Manhattan drew thousands of spectators who gathered to watch the thrilling races unfold. VIP guests enjoyed a lavish experience with gourmet catering and exclusive viewing areas, while celebrities like Olympic ski racer Lindsey Vonn mingled with team owners and fans.
As the races kicked off in the early afternoon, guests were captivated by the high-speed action happening right before their eyes. Unlike Formula 1, where spectators can only see a portion of the track, SailGP offers a full view of the racing in a tight area close to shore.
After three intense races, the team from New Zealand emerged victorious, solidifying their place as one of the top contenders in the competition. The event concluded with a lively “Apres Sail” party where sailors and fans celebrated into the late afternoon, enjoying music, mingling, and indulging in gourmet treats.
Despite the sweltering temperatures, the excitement and energy of the event never waned, leaving attendees in awe of the thrilling spectacle that is SailGP. With the season finals set to take place in San Francisco in July, the competition is sure to continue captivating audiences around the globe with its high-speed, high-adrenaline racing.
