Renowned composer Richard M. Sherman, known for his iconic songs in Disney film classics such as Mary Poppins, has passed away at the age of 95 in Beverly Hills. Sherman, who collaborated with his late brother Robert, won two Oscars in 1965 for their work on Mary Poppins.

The duo’s timeless compositions, including songs like Trust in Me from The Jungle Book and Truly Scrumptious from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, have left a lasting impact on generations of Disney fans. Their work was recognized with induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the US National Medal of the Arts in 2008.

Sherman’s contributions extended beyond Mary Poppins, with hits featured in films like The Aristocats, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and various Winnie the Pooh shorts. The brothers were even portrayed in the 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks, shedding light on the making of Mary Poppins.

One of their most famous songs, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, became a pop sensation and earned them Oscars for Best Music Score and Best Original Song. Sherman’s impact on the entertainment industry was further solidified with three Grammy awards, 24 gold and platinum albums, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Even in his later years, Sherman remained active in producing musical scores, collaborating with composer Fabrizio Mancinelli on a new song for an animated short film in 2023. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Sherman’s funeral is set to take place on 31 May in California, as the world mourns the loss of a musical genius whose melodies will continue to enchant audiences for years to come.
