Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of renowned horror filmmaker David Cronenberg, has made her feature directorial debut with the gripping and fast-paced thriller “Humane.” The film, written by Michael Sparaga, presents a society on the brink of collapse, filled with conspiracy theories and discord reminiscent of our own world.
The story follows a wealthy family, led by former war correspondent Charles (Peter Gallagher) and his celebrity chef wife Dawn (Uni Park), as they come together for a tense dinner party. Their four children, each with their own struggles and secrets, are forced to confront their issues as the evening takes a dark turn.
While the film starts off strong, with a sense of urgency and intrigue, it eventually loses momentum as the plot becomes increasingly convoluted. The characters, aside from Noah (Sebastian Chacon), lack depth and fail to fully engage the audience.
Despite its flaws, “Humane” offers a thought-provoking look at a society on the brink, raising questions about the consequences of our actions and the importance of family bonds. Cronenberg’s direction shows promise, and Chacon’s performance is a standout in an otherwise uneven cast.
Overall, “Humane” is a promising debut for Cronenberg, showcasing her talent for creating tension and suspense. While it may not fully deliver on its potential, it is a film that will leave audiences thinking long after the credits roll.
