Republican Senators Threaten to Halt Senate Business Over Mayorkas Impeachment Trial

Republican senators are prepared to grind Senate business to a halt if they do not get a full trial into the articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. Roughly a dozen GOP senators have been planning for more than a week to obstruct legislative proceedings and regular business in the Senate if their demands are not met.

“The Senate runs on unanimous consent,” a Senate Republican aide familiar with the talks told Fox News Digital. “Any one senator can do that.”

The conversation has been ongoing since last week, with several senators voicing support for slowing or stopping legislative business if the impeachment trial is tabled. House Speaker Mike Johnson decided to wait until next week to deliver the articles to the Senate after facing pressure from GOP senators.

If Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrats seek to table the impeachment trial next week, Republican senators could object to basic procedural measures, causing a standstill in the Senate. The plan is meant to bring Schumer and Democrats to the negotiating table on the Mayorkas impeachment trial.

The White House Counsel’s office and DHS have not provided immediate comment on the situation. The Senate awaits further developments as tensions rise over the impending impeachment trial.
