The GOP is blasting President Biden’s campaign over an “out-of-touch” memo warning that former President Trump’s re-election could mean the end of one of Washington’s most glamorous traditions – the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The annual social event, attended by D.C.’s elite in media, journalism, and politics, is under threat if Trump returns to the White House, according to the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
The Republican National Committee (RNC) responded by criticizing Biden for pandering to journalists and threatening the event, calling it “pathetic and out of touch.” They emphasized that Republicans will continue to focus on important issues and present solutions to Biden’s failures.
Former President Trump never attended the dinner during his time in office, opting to hold a rally with supporters in 2019 instead. The event was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Democrats have criticized Trump for shunning the dinner, accusing him of showing contempt for journalists and the First Amendment.
The DNC warned that if Trump wins in November, this Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner could be the last one. They described Trump as a “thin-skinned narcissist” who cannot handle criticism and lacks respect for the free press.
Despite the back-and-forth between the two parties, the Trump campaign did not respond to requests for comment, and the DNC declined to provide additional statements. The event, scheduled for Saturday, will see President Biden in attendance, while the future of the tradition remains uncertain.
