The small town of Euclid, Ohio, is in mourning after the tragic death of one of their own – Officer Jacob Derbin. The 23-year-old military veteran, who had been with the Euclid Police Department for less than a year, was killed in an ambush on Saturday night.
According to reports, Officer Derbin was responding to a disturbance call at a residence when he was shot by a gunman. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect, identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was on the run, prompting a massive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
After an intense search, Vaughn was found deceased inside a residence on Sunday evening. Police described him as heavily armed, and the circumstances of his death are still under investigation.
The loss of Officer Derbin has left the entire Euclid Police Department devastated. Chief Scott Meyer described him as an “incredible” person with a great heart and an amazing smile. Governor Mike DeWine also offered his condolences, praising Derbin’s bravery and dedication to the community.
In honor of Officer Derbin’s life and service, flags will be flown at half-staff on all public buildings in Cuyahoga County and across the state of Ohio. Derbin was engaged to be married in July, and his family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the loss of a beloved member of their community.
