Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, is facing scrutiny over comments he made in a 2018 video regarding his military service. In the video, Walz is heard discussing his handling of weapons “in war,” which has sparked controversy among Republicans, including vice presidential candidate JD Vance.
The Harris campaign spokesperson clarified that Walz misspoke in the video, emphasizing that he did handle weapons of war during his military service and believes that only trained military members should have access to such deadly weapons. The spokesperson also criticized President Donald Trump and JD Vance for prioritizing the gun lobby over the safety of children.
Republicans, led by JD Vance, have criticized Walz’s military service, with Vance accusing him of “stolen valor” for allegedly lying about his service. Walz served 24 years in the National Guard but never deployed to a war zone. Despite this, he did deploy to Vicenza, Italy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003.
The Trump campaign has also weighed in on the controversy, with communications director Steven Cheung accusing Walz of lying and fraud. Cheung questioned why Walz is sending out spokespeople to address the issue instead of addressing it himself.
The debate over Walz’s military service is likely to continue as the election approaches. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
