U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, announced on Sunday night that she is currently undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. Despite the challenging diagnosis, the 74-year-old congresswoman assured her constituents that she will soon be back at full strength.
Jackson Lee, who has been representing Texas’ 18th congressional district for the past 30 years, stated in a press release, “My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis for pancreatic cancer. I am currently undergoing treatment to battle this disease that impacts tens of thousands of Americans every year.”
The congresswoman acknowledged that the road ahead will not be easy, but expressed confidence in her medical team’s plan to target her specific disease. She also emphasized her commitment to continue serving her constituents, even if she may be occasionally absent from Congress during her treatment.
This is not the first time Jackson Lee has faced a health challenge. In 2011, she was diagnosed with breast cancer but announced the following year that she was cancer-free. Despite her health battles, Jackson Lee has remained dedicated to public service, previously serving as a judge and an at-large Houston City Council member before being elected to Congress.
Last year, Jackson Lee ran an unsuccessful campaign for Houston mayor but ultimately decided to seek reelection in Congress. In her statement, she reflected on her lifelong commitment to faith, humanity, and public service, vowing to approach her current fight with the same courage and determination.
As she embarks on this new chapter, Jackson Lee asked for prayers for herself and her family, while assuring her constituents that they will remain in her thoughts. She concluded her statement by saying, “God bless you and God bless the United States of America.”
