Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu made a valiant effort to rob a home run from New York Yankees infielder Oswaldo Cabrera during a recent game at Fenway Park. The play would have been one of the greatest catches in MLB history, but unfortunately, the ball didn’t stay in Abreu’s glove.
In the top of the second inning, Cabrera hit a deep ball to right field off Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford. Abreu sprinted back, leaped in the air, and appeared to make the catch as his body crashed into the seats over the wall. However, when he opened his glove, the ball was not there.
Upon further review, it was determined that Abreu did have the ball in his glove initially, but it popped out when he made contact with the seats. Despite his efforts, the Yankees took a 4-3 lead over the Red Sox.
Despite the missed catch, Abreu’s home run robbery attempt drew praise on social media, with many commending his effort and athleticism. Abreu also launched a solo home run in the game, showcasing his skills on both offense and defense.
