A rare Hulk-branded Xbox console, one of only 50 ever made, has been donated to a charity shop in Oxford and could fetch thousands of pounds at auction. The vivid green gaming device, created to promote the 2003 Hulk superhero film, has already attracted a bid of over £400 in an online sale.
Paul Smith, a tester at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), discovered the console’s potential value while working on it. He noted that the device was only available as a prize in a UK cinema scratchcard competition, with only 36 consoles ever won and about 20 found so far.
The charity’s eBay listing describes the console as even rarer than a similar green Xbox created for Mountain Dew in the USA, of which 5,000 were made. The money raised from the sale of the Hulk-branded Xbox will go towards research into heart and circulatory diseases.
The original Microsoft Xbox was released in Europe in 2002 and sold 24 million units worldwide. It competed against other gaming consoles like the Playstation 2, GameCube, and Dreamcast. Launch titles included popular games like Halo: Combat Evolved and Project Gotham Racing.
The name “Xbox” is a shortened version of “DirectX Box”, referencing the programming tools Microsoft developed in the 1990s for running games on their Windows platform. This rare Hulk-branded Xbox console is a unique piece of gaming history that is sure to attract collectors and fans alike.
