Seven rabbis and peace activists were arrested near the border with Gaza on Friday as they attempted to deliver food supplies into the territory, sparking a wave of controversy and highlighting the dire humanitarian situation in the region.

The group, consisting of 30 rabbis and activists from Israel and the United States, was stopped by police officers as they tried to reach the Erez crossing, a crucial transit point between Israel and northern Gaza. Organized by Rabbis for Ceasefire, the effort aimed to draw attention to the escalating reports of starvation in Gaza, with the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification initiative warning of an imminent famine in the area closest to Erez.

The protest, timed to coincide with the Jewish festival of Passover, sought to underscore the interconnectedness of Jewish and Palestinian liberation. While the attempt to deliver half a ton of rice and flour into Gaza ultimately failed, the supplies will now be donated to needy Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Among those arrested was author Ayelet Waldman, as confirmed by her husband, fellow author Michael Chabon. The arrests have reignited the debate over aid delivery to Gaza, with Israeli officials denying accusations of systematically limiting aid and attributing shortages to logistical challenges and damage caused during conflicts.

Despite the efforts of aid groups and increased aid truck deliveries, a majority of Jewish Israelis remain opposed to further aid reaching Gaza, according to a recent poll. Israeli protesters have also been gathering at border crossings, attempting to block aid convoys entering the territory.

The arrests of the rabbis and activists have brought renewed attention to the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the complexities surrounding aid delivery in the region.
