A recent poll conducted by Quinnipiac University revealed that a slim majority of Americans are in favor of a House bill that would ban TikTok if the platform is not sold to a company without ties to the Chinese Communist Party. The poll found that 51% of Americans support the legislation, compared to 41% who support an outright national ban.
The bill, led by House China Select Committee Chair Rep. Mike Gallagher and ranking member Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, would require TikTok to divest itself of CCP control within 165 days of passage or face a ban in the U.S. Critics of TikTok have long raised concerns about the Chinese government’s potential access to sensitive user data through the app.
Despite the majority support for the bill, younger Americans, particularly those in the 18-34 age group, are more likely to oppose the legislation. This demographic, which makes up a significant portion of TikTok’s user base, has been vocal in defending access to the platform.
The bill passed through the House with a bipartisan 352-65 vote, indicating strong support from lawmakers. However, opponents of the bill, including young people and activists, have expressed concerns about restricting access to TikTok.
The debate over TikTok’s future in the U.S. continues to be a contentious issue, with both supporters and critics making their voices heard. Stay tuned for further developments on this story.
