The Los Angeles Police Department is ramping up security measures for the upcoming Academy Awards on Sunday night in response to potential protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Cmdr. Randy Goddard of the LAPD stated that the department had received intelligence, including from social media posts, indicating that at least one group is planning to disrupt the Oscars ceremony. The goal, he said, is to ensure the safety of guests and the success of the event while also respecting protesters’ First Amendment rights.
Some groups may attempt to block traffic or use other disruptive tactics, according to Commander Goddard. The LAPD plans to increase resources to facilitate any marches or demonstrations, but will not tolerate any illegal activity that could jeopardize the safety of attendees.
The FBI in Los Angeles will also be present at the event to share intelligence and support the LAPD in their security efforts. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hosts the Oscars, has a history of dealing with disruptions and has implemented tight security measures to protect guests and the venue.
With the Dolby Theater secured by railings, fencing, checkpoints, and private security guards, Commander Goddard’s main objective is to ensure the safe arrival of guests at the venue. The LAPD is prepared to find a balance between allowing peaceful protests and maintaining order to prevent any disruptions to the prestigious event.
