Actress Amanda Abbington has found herself at the center of a disturbing incident, as police are currently investigating a reported death threat sent to her. The threat, delivered via email, warned Abbington that she would “die on stage” unless she retracted a complaint she made about her former Strictly Come Dancing partner, Giovanni Pernice.
The Metropolitan Police were called to the Park Theatre in London, where Abbington is currently starring in a play, on Friday in response to the alleged malicious communication. As of now, no arrests have been made, but investigations are ongoing.
Abbington, who left the BBC series in October, had raised concerns about Pernice’s behavior and lodged a formal complaint, sparking further allegations about backstage behavior on the production. Pernice, who has since left the show, has denied any accusations of abusive or threatening behavior.
This incident comes in the wake of Abbington revealing that she and her daughter had received rape threats, while her son had been threatened with death. The actress described the online abuse she has faced as “brutal, relentless, and unforgiving” since speaking out about her time on Strictly.
The BBC has stated that they take such allegations seriously and have processes in place to address them. Meanwhile, Park Theatre has confirmed receiving the threat and is cooperating with the police in their inquiries to ensure the safety of their staff, artists, and patrons.
Abbington’s representatives have chosen not to comment on the matter, while BBC News has reached out to Pernice’s representatives for a response. As the investigation continues, the entertainment industry is once again confronted with the importance of addressing and preventing such threats and abusive behavior.
