Trailblazing actress Cleo Sylvestre, known for her groundbreaking roles in the UK entertainment industry, has passed away at the age of 79. Sylvestre made history as the first black actress to play a leading role at the National Theatre and to have a regular leading role in a UK soap opera, Crossroads.

Throughout her career, Sylvestre appeared in a variety of TV series, including Grange Hill and the Channel 5 reboot of All Creatures Great and Small. Her talent and versatility also extended to the music industry, where she released a version of To Know Him is to Love Him in 1964, featuring The Rolling Stones as her backing singers.

Born in April 1945 in Camden, north London, Sylvestre pursued acting from a young age and made her mark on the West End stage in productions like Wise Child. She continued to break barriers by becoming the first black woman to have a leading role in a National Theatre production.
