Amateur Fisherwoman in Oregon Potentially Breaks World Record with Rare Catch

An amateur fisherwoman in Tillamook, Oregon, may have unexpectedly broken a world record while angling for rockfish on April Fool’s Day. Rebecca Jones, a self-taught hunter and fisher, made the remarkable catch of a monkeyface prickleback, a strange-looking eel-like fish that she had never seen before.

Jones began her day by digging for sand shrimp and then headed to Barview Jetty near Garibaldi in hopes of catching rockfish for dinner. Instead, she reeled in the 4.8-pound monkeyface prickleback, potentially breaking the current world record held by a 3-pound, 4-ounce catch in Newport, Oregon in 2008.

The impressive fisherwoman, who largely hunts and fishes in solitude, credits her skills to watching videos, reading books, and studying Oregon fishing and hunting regulations. She has been hunting deer, elk, and bear for three years and is now trying her hand at spring turkey season.

Jones expressed her passion for fishing, hunting, crabbing, and clamming, and her desire to teach other women these valuable skills to pass on to the next generation. She believes that taking advantage of the opportunities Oregon offers gives individuals self-confidence and self-sufficiency.
