Actress Amanda Abbington has come forward with allegations of mistreatment during her time on Strictly Come Dancing, sparking a formal complaint and internal investigation by the BBC.
Abbington, known for her role in Sherlock, revealed that she raised concerns about her dance partner Giovanni Pernice’s behavior as early as her third day in rehearsals. She described the environment as “toxic” and claimed she experienced bullying and inappropriate behavior from Pernice.
After dropping out of the show in week five, Abbington lodged a formal complaint with the BBC, prompting further allegations and an internal investigation. Pernice has denied any claims of threatening or abusive behavior and is cooperating fully with the review.
In an emotional interview with ITV’s Lorraine, Abbington expressed her desire for an apology from the BBC and emphasized the importance of listening to and supporting women in the industry. She also revealed that she and her family have faced threats on social media following her decision to leave the show.
The BBC has stated that they take issues raised by participants seriously and have implemented additional measures to strengthen welfare and support on the show. BBC director general Tim Davie has apologized to contestants who have had negative experiences and affirmed that the show will continue.
As the investigation continues, Abbington hopes for accountability and change within the industry to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
