A mountain lion killed a family’s pit bull in Los Angeles, California, sparking concern among residents in the area. The incident occurred near the Oakridge mobile home park in the Sylmar neighborhood, prompting officials to issue a “wildlife warning” for the San Fernando Valley.
The mountain lion was first spotted at around 5 a.m. on Saturday, with one resident, Rey Constante, witnessing the predator on top of a gray pit bull with a leash still attached. Constante took to Facebook to warn his neighbors, urging them to avoid walking their pets at night to prevent further attacks.
The dog, named Gigi, had recently been adopted from the Southern California Pit Bull Rescue, adding to the tragedy of the situation. The organization is preserving the dog’s remains for investigation by California Fish and Wildlife.
In response to the incident, the Sylmar neighborhood council emphasized the importance of cohabitating with wildlife and urged residents to take precautions. Officials are advising against jogging or hiking alone and recommending that children be kept close. If a mountain lion is encountered, residents are instructed not to approach the animal, run from it, or crouch down. Instead, they should try to appear larger by raising their arms and be prepared to fight back if attacked.
The community is on high alert following this disturbing event, highlighting the need for vigilance when living in areas where wildlife may pose a threat.
