The Nigerian government has refuted claims that Tigran Gambaryan, an executive at Binance, is being detained in substandard conditions. In a statement released by Nigeria’s minister of communication and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, on June 21, it was emphasized that Gambaryan receives full consular services and high-quality medical care while in custody.

Idris made it clear that Gambaryan’s incarceration is based on a court order, and only the court has the authority to change the conditions or order his release. The minister stressed the importance of judicial integrity and lawful trials in the case.

The response from the Nigerian government comes after two US Congressmen, Representatives French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan, visited Gambaryan at the Kuje Detention Center on June 19, 2024. They demanded his release after sharing a video of their visit.

Yuki Gambaryan, Tigran’s wife, has appealed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop charges against her husband, citing his dedication to combating tax evasion and money laundering during his time as a special agent with the US IRS. US lawmakers have also shown support for Gambaryan, highlighting his successful investigations into financial fraud and cybercrime.

The case against Binance and Gambaryan continues, with Director Abdulkadir Abbas of the Nigerian SEC testifying during a hearing on June 21. Abbas reiterated that Binance lacked the required registration to conduct business in Nigeria. The cross-examination has been postponed until July 1.

As the situation unfolds, the international community will be closely watching the developments surrounding Gambaryan’s detention and the legal proceedings against Binance in Nigeria.
