Police Converge on U.S. Campus Protests
Police officers descended on college campuses across the United States as scores of pro-Palestinian demonstrators who had set up encampments and taken over buildings were arrested.
At the University of California, Los Angeles, officers ordered protesters to vacate their encampment or face arrest. While some students heeded the warning and left, hundreds remained inside, gearing up with helmets, masks, and goggles as officers stood by.
The previous night saw violent clashes when a group of about 200 counterprotesters stormed the encampment, using pepper spray and attempting to dismantle barricades. The confrontation lasted until the early hours of the morning when officers were able to quell the unrest.
In New York City, police in riot gear arrested demonstrators at Fordham University’s Manhattan campus, making it the third university in the city, after Columbia and the City College of New York, to experience mass arrests within 24 hours.
The situation continues to unfold as tensions rise on college campuses across the country. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
