Rice University Student Killed in Apparent Murder-Suicide on First Day of Classes

The Rice University community is in shock after the tragic death of junior political science and pre-law major, Andrea Rodriguez Avila, in an apparent murder-suicide that occurred on the first day of classes. Avila, 21, had recently transferred to Rice from the Community College of Baltimore County and was highly involved on campus, serving as deputy parliamentarian of the Rice Student Association and a peer academic advisor at Jones College.

Avila was found dead in her dorm room on Monday, prompting a welfare check by university police. A man, not affiliated with the university, was also found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two were in a dating relationship, according to Rice University Police Chief Clemente Rodriguez.

The heartbreaking incident has left the campus reeling, with Rice University President Reginald DesRoches expressing deep sorrow and grief for the loss. Classes were canceled on Tuesday as the community comes to terms with the tragedy.

The identities of the individuals involved have not been released by authorities, pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The Rice University community is coming together to support one another during this difficult time, as they mourn the loss of a beloved student.
