Shooting Erupts at Annual Dominican Festival in Allentown, Pennsylvania
Police in Allentown, Pennsylvania responded to a chaotic scene on Sunday night as two groups opened fire at each other during the city’s annual Dominican Festival. The incident, which occurred at about 6:45 p.m. in the 100 block of North Seventh Street, left several people wounded and in need of medical attention.
According to Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan, Allentown Police officers also opened fire during the altercation. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities or injuries to law enforcement in the exchange of gunfire.
Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk expressed his disappointment in the violence that unfolded, but assured the public that there is no ongoing danger. "Our neighbors have no patience for those that would make our streets unsafe," Tuerk stated on social media. "This behavior is unacceptable and we will continue to take the necessary steps to protect everyone from harm."
State Rep. Josh Siegel, who represents the area where the shooting took place, condemned the violence and emphasized the need to hold those responsible accountable. "Allentown is stronger than the few who lack respect for its laws," Siegel said.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the dangerous altercation. Despite the disturbing incident, community leaders remain optimistic that Allentown will not be defined by acts of violence and will continue to strive for a safe and peaceful environment for all residents.
