Sage, the extravagantly coifed miniature poodle, stole the show at the 148th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Tuesday night, surprising everyone with her winsome charm and taking home the top prize. The competition, which began with over 2,500 dogs from more than 200 breeds, culminated in a showdown between seven group champions, with Sage ultimately winning the coveted title of best in show.
The best-in-show judge, Rosalind Kramer, was impressed by the “absolutely glorious” lineup of dogs but ultimately chose Sage as the winner. Despite being ranked just 39th among show dogs in the country before the competition, Sage, also known as GCHG Ch Surrey Sage, captured hearts with her unique look and demeanor.
Sage, like all show poodles, is mostly hair, with a luxurious coiffure that sets her apart. Her handler, Kaz Hosaka, known for his poodle hairdressing expertise, described her as a special dog with a certain je ne sais quoi. This win marks the 11th time a poodle has taken the top prize at Westminster.
In a surprising turn of events, Sage’s great-grandmother, Spice, also a miniature poodle, won the competition in 2002. Kaz Hosaka, who has been handling poodles for years, announced that he will retire after this win, allowing Sage to enjoy a more relaxed life outside of the show ring.
While Sage took home the top prize, reserve best in show went to Mercedes, a German shepherd known for her flashy good looks and graceful demeanor. The other finalists, including Louis the Afghan hound, Comet the Shih Tzu, Micah the cocker spaniel, and Frankie the bull terrier, also captivated audiences with their unique qualities.
Overall, the 148th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was a night to remember, with Sage’s unexpected win adding an element of surprise and delight to the prestigious event.
