Mike Erickson emerged victorious in a crowded GOP primary election in Oregon’s 6th Congressional District, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown with Democratic Rep. Andrea Salinas in November.
The Associated Press called the race for Erickson on Tuesday night in a district that spans Polk and Yamhill counties and parts of Marion, Clackamas, and Washington counties. Erickson, a Tigard businessman who previously lost to Salinas in 2022, emphasized his status as a political outsider and outlined his top priorities as “securing the southern border, fighting inflation, and supporting law enforcement.”
Among Erickson’s challengers was David Russ, the Mayor of Dundee, Oregon, in Yamhill County, who lost to Erickson in the 2022 primary. Russ, who boasts an extensive private sector record, highlighted his focus on curbing homelessness and providing direct assistance to individuals.
Also vying for the Republican nomination was David Burch, a candidate for governor in 2022, who emphasized his commitment to addressing homelessness and aiding individuals in need. Conrad J. Herold, a retired contractor from Salem, Oregon, rounded out the field of candidates in the race.
With Republicans aiming to maintain and expand their slim majority in the House of Representatives, the November race in the 6th Congressional District is expected to be closely watched. The Cook Political Report currently ranks the contest as “lean Democrat,” reflecting the competitive nature of the race.
Salinas, who narrowly defeated Erickson in 2022 and secured victory against primary challenger Cody Reynolds on Tuesday, is gearing up for a tough battle as she seeks to retain her seat in Congress.
As the campaign heats up, all eyes will be on Erickson and Salinas as they prepare to face off in what promises to be a closely contested election in November.
