American Man Convicted of Murder and Assault Near Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle
A chilling crime near Germany’s famed Neuschwanstein castle has led to the conviction of an American man from Michigan. Troy Phillip Bohling, 31, was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, and rape with fatal consequences for brutally attacking two American women, Eva Liu, 21, and Kelsey Chang, 22.
The incident occurred on June 14, 2023, when Bohling lured the two tourists, promising to show them an idyllic spot for taking selfies near the Marienbruecke, a bridge with a view of the castle. Prosecutors revealed that Bohling first attacked Liu, trying to undress her before pushing Chang down a steep slope. Chang survived with injuries, while Liu tragically died from her injuries after being strangled and raped by Bohling.
During the trial, Bohling reportedly admitted to the crimes, leading to a conviction by the Kempten state court. The presiding judge described Bohling as “incredibly callous” and determined that he bears particularly severe guilt, likely resulting in a longer sentence than the usual 15 years in Germany.
Authorities also discovered child pornography on Bohling’s laptop and cellphone during the investigation. The defendant’s actions were deemed so heinous that a release after 15 years was deemed unjustifiable by the judge.
The victims were rescued from the ravine by a helicopter, and Bohling was arrested near the scene of the attack. The court found that he kept video footage and photos of the crime as a “trophy.”
While German privacy laws prevent the identification of the perpetrator and victims, reports and statements from friends and family have revealed their names. The tragic incident has shocked both local and international communities, highlighting the importance of safety and vigilance while traveling.
