Michael Ball Pays Tribute to Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2
West End star Michael Ball has taken over the Sunday Love Songs programme on BBC Radio 2, paying tribute to the late DJ Steve Wright and calling his legacy “immeasurable”.
Ball, who has been a presenter on Radio 2 since 2008, was named as the new host of the show after Wright passed away in February. The 61-year-old expressed his pride in carrying on Wright’s work, saying, “He created Love Songs, and I am so, so proud to be carrying the baton for him into the future.”
Wright, who joined the BBC in the 1970s, hosted shows on Radio 1 and Radio 2 for over four decades, as well as presenting Top of the Pops on BBC One. His death at the age of 69 prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans alike.
During the show, now titled Love Songs with Michael Ball, the presenter dedicated the last song as a tribute to Wright. Ball shared that the final song, known as the “last dance”, would be something “very special” and one of Wright’s favorites.
In memory of Wright, Ball encouraged listeners to share a hug with someone they care about, whether it be a partner, friend, family member, or even a pet. He played the song “Wichita Lineman” by Glen Campbell, a track frequently used by Wright on his show.
Sunday Love Songs held a special place in Wright’s heart, as he developed the format himself to connect with listeners through their emails and letters. Even after leaving his Radio 2 afternoon show in 2022, Wright continued to host Sunday Love Songs until his passing.
Now, Ball carries on the tradition, hosting the show on Sundays from 09:00 to 11:00, honoring Wright’s legacy and bringing comfort and joy to listeners through the power of music and love.
