Skin-care and cosmetic experts are sharing their advice on how to protect your body from head to toe in the battle against harmful UV rays. With summer in full swing, it’s important to know when and how much sunscreen to apply, as well as which type is best for your skin.
Sunscreens come in two main types: chemical and mineral. While both offer protection against UV rays, mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are known for their ability to deflect rays from the skin. However, chemical formulas may irritate sensitive skin. Dr. Elyse Love, a dermatologist based in New York, recommends EltaMD’s UV Clear SPF 46 and Skinbetter Science’s Sunbetter Sheer SPF 70 for the face, and Supergoop’s Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50 for the body. Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion SPF 50 is a good drugstore option. The key is to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, or higher if your skin is particularly sensitive.
When it comes to application, experts recommend using at least a shot glass’s worth of sunscreen on your body and a nickel-size amount on your face. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to often-neglected areas like the ears, scalp, hands, feet, and lips. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Sun-protective clothing with a UPF of at least 30 can also provide additional protection.
If you do end up with a sunburn, it’s important to soothe and treat the inflammation. A cooling post-sun routine recommended by aesthetician Lily Njoroge includes using a hydrating mask, showering in cool water, applying a cool compress, and wearing loose-fitting clothes. Avoid using active skincare ingredients like vitamin C and retinols until the burn has healed, and opt for gentle, moisture-boosting products instead.
