Astronaut, author, and U.S. Senator Mark Kelly emerges as top contender for Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate
As the race for the Oval Office heats up, Vice President Kamala Harris is reportedly considering astronaut, author, and U.S. Senator Mark Kelly as her Democratic running mate. Kelly, who has a dramatic life story that includes triumphs in space and tragedy on Earth, could bring a unique perspective to the ticket.
Kelly, who flew into space four times as a NASA astronaut, faced gut-wrenching tragedy when his wife, former Arizona U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, was shot in the head in a 2011 assassination attempt. Despite the challenges they faced, Kelly and Giffords co-authored books together, sharing their journey of courage and hope.
Born in New Jersey in 1964, Kelly served as a U.S. Navy aviator during the Gulf War and commanded four space shuttle missions. In 2020, he defeated Republican incumbent Martha McSally to win his Senate seat. His marriage to Giffords in 2007 was tested when she was nearly killed in the Tucson shooting, but their bond only grew stronger as they fought for gun violence prevention.
Kelly’s potential selection as Harris’ running mate has sparked excitement among many, as his unique background and experiences could bring a fresh perspective to the Democratic ticket. As the decision-making process continues, all eyes are on Kelly and Harris as they aim to defeat Republican former President Donald Trump and his vice-presidential nominee, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, in the upcoming election.
