Loretta Swit Reflects on Deep Connection with ‘M*A*S*H’ Costar Jamie Farr 41 Years After Show’s Wrap
Loretta Swit, best known for her role as Major Margaret Houlihan on the hit series “M*A*S*H,” recently opened up about her enduring bond with her costar Jamie Farr, who portrayed Corporal Klinger on the show. Despite the passing of 41 years since the show’s finale, Swit still holds a soft spot for Farr, crediting him for keeping her connected to the joy that the show brought to millions of viewers.
In a new interview with First For Women, Swit shared, “[Jamie] still makes me laugh and keeps me connected to that piece of my heart that brought so much joy to millions of viewers.” The two friends frequently participate in autograph signings across the country, delighting fans with their continued camaraderie.
Reflecting on the show’s immense success, Swit attributes it to the genuine chemistry among the cast both on and off-screen. “Everyone liked coming to work,” she explained. “The camaraderie was unlike anything I ever experienced because we were all connected deeply. The chemistry was real, and the energy everyone brought to the set was off the charts, which was a part of the reason the show developed a huge/loyal fan base.”
Swit also emphasized the importance of laughter and humor in the show, especially given its setting in a war zone. “Laughter and humor were our defense against standing in blood and working on bodies that were young enough to be in school,” she said. “You needed the funniest people in the world to make this believable and this cast exceeded that and more.”
“M*A*S*H,” which followed a team of doctors stationed in Korea during the Korean War, won 14 Emmy Awards throughout its 11-season run. Swit, who founded the nonprofit SwitHeart Animal Alliance in 2017, continues to be proud of her role on the show and remains dedicated to her activism and artistry.
As Swit and Farr’s friendship endures, fans of “M*A*S*H” can continue to celebrate the lasting impact of the beloved series and the enduring connection between its stars.
