London is set to welcome its first LGBTQ+ cinema, The Arzner, named after pioneering lesbian filmmaker Dorothy Arzner. The cinema, set to open later this year in Bermondsey Square, will offer a unique space for art house and independent films.
Simon Burke and Piers Greenlees, the minds behind The Arzner, aim to create a safe and inclusive space for all in one of the most LGBTQ+ densely-populated areas of the country. The venue, which will have a capacity of up to 150 people including the bar, is a welcome addition to the area after the closure of Kino Bermondsey earlier this year.
Mr. Burke, who also opened the area’s first LGBTQ+ pub, The Rising SE1, last year, expressed his excitement about the new venture. “This to our knowledge will be the only LGBTQ+ cinema in all of London,” he said. “This licence will allow us to operate a safe space for all in one of the most LGBTQ+ densely-populated areas of the country.”
The licensing committee has granted permission for The Arzner to operate until 23:00 Sunday to Wednesday and until midnight from Thursday to Saturday. With plans to showcase a diverse range of films and provide a welcoming environment for all, The Arzner is sure to become a beloved spot for cinema enthusiasts and LGBTQ+ community members alike.
