Renowned artist David Hockney is set to spearhead a nationwide drawing project that will capture the essence of everyday life as part of Bradford’s tenure as the UK City of Culture 2025. The initiative, announced alongside a lineup of exciting events, aims to showcase the diverse talent and rich heritage of the West Yorkshire city.
Hockney, who hails from Bradford and is considered one of Britain’s greatest living artists, will invite people of all ages across the UK to participate in the drawing project. This project is just one of the many exciting events planned for the City of Culture year, including the Turner Prize, outdoor performances by magician Steven Frayne (Dynamo), and tributes to the Brontë sisters.
Music will also take center stage, with celebrations of brass bands and South Asian music in the works. Creative director Shanaz Gulzar expressed excitement about the lineup, emphasizing Bradford’s youthful, diverse, and creative spirit.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy praised the program for allowing Bradford to share its incredible story and local heritage with the world. Additionally, former One Direction star Zayn Malik has been named the ambassador for Bradford’s City of Culture year, further highlighting the city’s vibrant cultural scene.
With a rich history that includes notable figures like JB Priestley and Andrea Dunbar, as well as being the birthplace of the Brontës, Bradford is poised to captivate audiences with its dynamic and diverse community. As one of the youngest cities in the UK, Bradford’s City of Culture designation promises to be a celebration of creativity, heritage, and community spirit.
