Lily Gladstone Takes Center Stage at Cannes Film Festival
At the Cannes Film Festival, much attention is paid to the standing ovation, with headlines racing to report which movie received the most prolonged cheers. But sometimes, where you sit is just as important as when you leap to your feet.
This was the case for actress Lily Gladstone at Kering’s annual Women in Motion dinner, attended by stars like Michelle Yeoh, Julianne Moore, Isabelle Huppert, and jury president Greta Gerwig. As one of Gerwig’s fellow jurors, Gladstone holds a prestigious position that represents a full-circle moment for her, as her profile was boosted last year when her film “Killers of the Flower Moon” debuted at Cannes.
Reflecting on her experience at last year’s Women in Motion dinner, Gladstone shared a humorous anecdote about accidentally sitting in the festival president’s chair, reserved for Iris Knobloch. This year, Gladstone found herself in a prime spot between Knobloch and Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux, joking that she was “the Leo this year,” referencing her seat next to Leonardo DiCaprio.
Despite a busy schedule filled with film projects, including a sci-fi film scripted by Charlie Kaufman and a remake of Ang Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet,” Gladstone expressed how her time at Cannes has recharged her artistic battery.
“I’m ready to get back to work and shift that gear, and immersing yourself in other people’s creativity is a great way to kick-start it again for yourself,” she said. “So I’m enjoying the hell out of it.”
As Gladstone and her fellow jurors continue to watch films in competition at Cannes, her experience at the festival has been both rewarding and inspiring, showcasing her talent and passion for the art of filmmaking.
