The Libertarian Party made history on Sunday night as they selected Chase Oliver, an openly gay former Democrat, as their presidential nominee after a grueling day of elimination voting and a four-day event in Washington. Oliver, who forced a runoff in a U.S. Senate race in Georgia in 2022, beat out nine other candidates, including the late addition of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Kennedy, who was eliminated in the first round of voting with just 2 percent of the total votes, was not the only surprise candidate at the convention. Former President Donald Trump also made a bid for the nomination, receiving six write-in votes in the first round. However, it was Oliver who ultimately secured the nomination, promising to unify the party and expand its reach across the country.

The Libertarian Party, known for its emphasis on individual liberties and limited government, draws supporters from all political backgrounds. With a platform that includes the dismantling of the regulatory state, the legalization of drugs and sex work, and opposition to foreign military spending, the party has gained momentum in recent years.

The convention, which was broadcast live on C-SPAN, was not without its share of drama and controversy. From heated debates about parliamentary rules to unexpected write-in candidates like Afroman and Stormy Daniels, the event showcased the party’s commitment to freedom of expression.

In his acceptance speech, Oliver pledged to bring an end to the “genocide in Gaza,” abolish the Federal Reserve, and stop taxation. He also took a swipe at Kennedy and Trump, calling for a new generation of leaders to take the reins.

The selection of Oliver as the nominee came as a relief to many party members, who had expressed skepticism about Kennedy and Trump’s presence at the convention. With the November election approaching, the Libertarian Party is gearing up for a competitive race, with Oliver leading the charge for a more free and independent America.
