Lena Dunham Drops Out of Directing Polly Pocket Film, Citing Greta Gerwig’s Success with Barbie
In a surprising turn of events, Lena Dunham has announced that she will no longer be directing the upcoming Polly Pocket film. The actor and director revealed to The New Yorker that she didn’t feel she could replicate the success that Greta Gerwig achieved with Barbie.
Dunham, known for creating and starring in the hit TV show Girls, had been working on the Polly Pocket script for three years before making the decision to step down. The film was set to star Lily Collins as the lead doll and was highly anticipated by fans.
Producer Robbie Brenner, who runs toy company Mattel’s film division, had previously praised Dunham’s script and collaborative nature. However, Dunham ultimately felt that she couldn’t put her own personal stamp on the project in the way Gerwig did with Barbie, which grossed $1.44 billion at the box office.
Despite Dunham’s departure, Mattel is still hopeful about the Polly Pocket film and has other projects in the works, including Barney and Hot Wheels. Dunham, on the other hand, is currently focused on her Netflix series Too Much, which is loosely based on her life and stars Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe.
Dunham’s decision to step away from the Polly Pocket film comes after her experiences with body shaming following her role in Girls. She expressed that she didn’t want to subject herself to that scrutiny again and made the difficult choice not to star in her own series.
While fans may be disappointed by Dunham’s departure from the Polly Pocket film, they can still look forward to her upcoming projects and the continuation of Mattel’s film lineup.
