Great White Shark Makes Historic Journey from South Carolina to Mexico

A great white shark named LeeBeth has made history by traveling over 2,000 miles from South Carolina to Mexico. Capt. Chip Michalove, the owner of Outcast Sport Fishing, tagged the 14-foot, 600-pound shark in December 2023, making her the farthest west a white shark has been tracked in the Gulf of Mexico.

Michalove, who works with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) to tag and track sharks, described LeeBeth as a “home run” in their research efforts. He mentioned that she is the first shark in history to be tagged in the Atlantic and swim all the way to the western part of the Gulf of Mexico.

Despite the surprise of LeeBeth’s journey, Michalove believes she may travel back up north to New England or Canada as the weather warms. This migration pattern is typical for large sharks, but it is unprecedented for a shark to travel all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico.

The data gathered from tracking LeeBeth is aiding research efforts and providing valuable insights into the behavior and migration patterns of great white sharks. Michalove expressed his excitement at being able to witness and track the shark’s journey, calling it a “wild” experience.
