Kyle Larson, NASCAR star, hit with significant penalties before Talladega race

Kyle Larson’s tough week at Talladega Superspeedway got even worse as NASCAR announced additional penalties for the driver just hours before the Geico 500.

Already starting from the back of the pack due to unapproved adjustments to the roof rails, Larson will now have to serve a pass-through penalty after the green flag drops on top of the other discipline. In addition, his crew chief, Cliff Daniels, was ejected from the race.

The No. 5 driver will face an uphill battle to make his way back to the front and secure a victory. Despite the setbacks, Larson has been one of the top drivers in the points standings this year, with wins at Las Vegas and strong finishes at Martinsville and Richmond.

This latest setback comes on the heels of NASCAR suspending two of Larson’s crew members after a wheel popped off during the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 in Texas last week. Larson finished 21st in that race, putting him at a disadvantage heading into Talladega.

Last year, Larson finished 33rd in the Talladega spring race after getting caught up in a crash with Ryan Preece, Ross Chastain, and Noah Gragson. Despite the damage to his vehicle, Larson emerged unscathed.
