Retired NASCAR driver Kurt Busch found himself in hot water this week after being arrested in Mooresville, North Carolina, for driving under the influence. The 46-year-old was pulled over for allegedly speeding, going 63 mph in a 45 mph zone, and was subsequently taken into custody for DWI, reckless driving, and speeding.

According to Racer.com, police officers noted that Busch displayed signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and red, glassy eyes. The former NASCAR champion admitted to being drunk, with his blood alcohol level more than double the state’s legal limit.

Busch, who now serves as an adviser to 23XI Racing, was booked into the Iredell County Detention Center but later released. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 19.

In a statement following the incident, Busch expressed deep regret, saying, “I’m very disappointed in myself, and I apologize to my family, my racing family, and to my fans. I will work with the authorities to rectify the situation and work with the county to make it a safer place in the future.”

Busch, who won the Cup Series title in 2004 and the Daytona 500 in 2017, announced his retirement from full-time racing in 2023. His younger brother, Kyle Busch, is an active NASCAR driver and a two-time series champion.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence, even for seasoned professionals like Kurt Busch. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
