Singer Justin Timberlake Arrested for Driving While Intoxicated in New York
Pop star Justin Timberlake found himself in hot water after being arrested for driving while intoxicated in Sag Harbor, an affluent village in the Hamptons, New York. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Timberlake was formally charged on Tuesday morning after being pulled over by police in his grey BMW for driving through a stop sign and failing to stay on the right side of the road.
According to officials, Timberlake’s eyes were described as “bloodshot and glassy” and he emitted a strong odor of alcohol from his breath. The singer also reportedly performed poorly on sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer test. Despite his arrest, Timberlake was released without bail and is scheduled to appear virtually in Sag Harbor court on July 26.
Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., stated that he will vigorously defend his client and is currently engaged in the discovery process with the District Attorney’s Office. The 43-year-old singer, known for hits like “Cry Me a River” and “SexyBack,” was set to embark on a global tour for his sixth album, Everything I Thought It Was.
This incident comes as a surprise to many, as Timberlake has been open about seeking help for excessive drinking in the past. In New York, penalties for driving while intoxicated can include up to a year in jail, a $1,000 fine, and the suspension of a driver’s license for at least six months.
Despite the legal troubles, Timberlake was scheduled to perform in Chicago this weekend and at New York’s Madison Square Garden next Tuesday. The Grammy-winning artist, also known for his acting roles in films like The Social Network and Friends With Benefits, is married to actor Jessica Biel and shares two children with her.
