Joni Mitchell’s Music Quietly Returns to Spotify After Two-Year Absence
Fans of legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell were thrilled to discover that her music has quietly returned to Spotify, more than two years after she removed it in protest. Mitchell had followed in the footsteps of Neil Young, who also took his music off the streaming platform due to concerns about the spread of misinformation regarding Covid-19 vaccines.
While there was no official announcement from Mitchell or her representatives, fans began to notice the reappearance of her albums on Spotify on Thursday. By Friday morning, most, if not all, of Mitchell’s original albums, including classics like “Blue” and “Court and Spark,” were back on the platform.
In January 2022, Mitchell had announced her decision to remove her music from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young, who had criticized the platform for hosting content that he believed spread misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines. Mitchell had expressed her concern about the impact of such misinformation, stating, “Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives.”
Young recently returned his music to Spotify, citing similar concerns about other music services also featuring content that he opposed. Mitchell, who has been more active in recent years following a health scare in 2015, has upcoming performances scheduled, including two “Joni Jam” shows at the Hollywood Bowl in October.
The return of Mitchell’s music to Spotify has been met with excitement from fans who have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to once again listen to her timeless classics on the popular streaming platform.
