Prominent columnists resign from the Jewish Chronicle in protest over fabricated articles on Israeli operations in Gaza

In a shocking turn of events, three well-known columnists have resigned from the Jewish Chronicle in protest over the publication of allegedly fabricated articles on Israeli operations in Gaza. Jonathan Freedland, Hadley Freeman, and David Aaronovitch announced their resignations, citing a “great disgrace” at the London-based newspaper.

The controversy began when the JC conducted a thorough investigation into one of its freelance journalists, Elon Perry, after allegations were made about aspects of his record. The newspaper stated that it was not satisfied with some of the claims made by the writer and subsequently deleted his articles and ended its association with him.

Freedland, who described the stories as fabricated, criticized the JC for showing only the “thinnest form of contrition.” Freeman stated that recent events made it impossible for her to stay, while Aaronovitch also announced his departure from the paper.

In response to the resignations, JC editor Jake Wallis Simons expressed understanding for the columnists’ decisions and took full responsibility for the mistakes that had been made. He assured readers that stronger internal procedures would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Elon Perry, the freelance journalist at the center of the controversy, defended himself, stating that the JC had made a huge mistake with its statement and described the situation as a “witch-hunt” against him caused by jealousy.

The JC clarified that while Perry had served in the Israel Defense Forces, they were not satisfied with some of his claims and had removed his stories from their website. Perry had written a series of articles for the JC, with one particularly contentious piece claiming that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was planning to smuggle himself and Israeli hostages out of Gaza to Iran.

The resignations of the prominent columnists have sent shockwaves through the Jewish Chronicle, with Freedland expressing his deep attachment to the paper but ultimately deciding to sever ties due to its departure from journalistic traditions. Aaronovitch echoed Freedland’s sentiments, stating that he, too, had resigned.

Hadley Freeman, while grateful for the support she had received at the paper, also announced her resignation in light of recent developments. The JC has been contacted for further comment on the situation.
