Fitness guru Jillian Michaels has sparked controversy with her criticism of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Michaels slammed the ceremony for what she called a “mockery” of “The Last Supper,” specifically addressing the LGBTQ+ community for what she perceived as “hypocrisy” and “lack of understanding.”
The ceremony featured several drag queen performers reenacting the famous scene painted by Leonardo da Vinci, where Jesus and his apostles share a final meal before the crucifixion. Michaels took to social media to express her outrage, stating, “Dear fellow gays… We demand tolerance and respect but then make a mockery of something sacred for over 2 billion Christians.”
The backlash was not limited to Michaels, as Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker also criticized the performance, calling it “crazy” and quoting scripture from the Bible that read, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked.”
The artistic director of the opening ceremony, Thomas Jolly, will also be directing the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games, as well as both closing ceremonies. The controversy surrounding the ceremony has sparked a heated debate on social media and beyond.
