The Great Sock War: Gen Z vs Millennials

In a fashion battle that has taken social media by storm, Gen Z and millennials are facing off over the length of their socks. While Gen Z is all about crew socks that reach midway up the shin, millennials are staunchly defending their ankle and no-show varieties.

The feud has escalated to the point where jabs are being exchanged, side-by-side comparisons are being posted, and some millennials are even declaring, “You will pry these ankle socks off my cold, dead feet.” The conversation started in October when podcaster Phoebe Parsons claimed in a TikTok video that ankle-height socks were a sign of age.

Celebrities like Billie Eilish and Angel Reese have been seen sporting crew socks, further fueling the debate. Even headlines like “Jennifer Lawrence Bravely Steps Out in Millennial Socks” are adding to the drama.

Companies like Nike, Aritzia, and Uniqlo are cashing in on the trend, with sales of crew socks on the rise. Bombas, a popular sock brand, has even introduced a “half calf” crew sock to cater to the demand.

While some millennials are crew-sock-curious, others are standing their ground. But as 17-year-old Shae Punzal from Carmel, Ind., points out, the sock frenzy is just a way to play up intergenerational differences online. In the end, she believes people should wear whatever makes them feel comfortable.

So, whether you’re team crew socks or team ankle socks, one thing is for sure – the Great Sock War is far from over.
