Karabo “Kay” Mahapa, a popular TikTok creator with over 350,000 followers, is using his platform to encourage young South Africans to go out and vote in the upcoming general election. With 42% of registered voters under the age of 40, the youth demographic could play a significant role in shaping the outcome of Wednesday’s election.
In a departure from his usual content, Mahapa has been posting videos urging his followers to participate in the democratic process. While he has not explicitly endorsed any political party, he has made it clear that he will not be voting for the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
The ANC, which has been in power for three decades, is facing criticism for allegations of corruption and economic mismanagement. Many young voters, like those in Mahapa’s audience, are expressing disillusionment with the party and are seeking change.
Other social media influencers in South Africa are also using their platforms to mobilize young voters. Beauty influencer Kay Yarms and comedian Bouwer Bosch have both created content aimed at encouraging their followers to engage in the election process.
The rise of influencers in political mobilization has not gone unnoticed by political parties, some of whom have approached content creators to promote their agendas. Mahapa, however, has declined such offers, citing concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
Despite the influence of social media in shaping political opinions, Mahapa emphasizes the importance of doing one’s own research and making informed decisions. He believes that influencers have a responsibility to educate and inform their audiences, but ultimately, voting alone will not solve all of South Africa’s problems.
As the country prepares for the upcoming election, Mahapa and other influencers are using their platforms to drive voter engagement and encourage young South Africans to exercise their democratic rights.
