The iconic hat worn by actor Harrison Ford in the second installment of the Indiana Jones film franchise has fetched a staggering $630,000 (£487,000) at auction in Los Angeles. The brown felt fedora, specifically made for the Temple of Doom film, was a hot item for movie memorabilia collectors.
Fans of the adventurous archaeologist will remember the hat from a memorable scene early on in the movie where Ford’s character, Indiana Jones, along with his companions, jump from a crashing plane in an inflatable raft. The hat was also used during additional photography at producer George Lucas’s visual effects facilities.
Interestingly, the fedora was not only worn by Ford but also by his stunt-double, Dean Ferrandini, who sadly passed away last year. The hat came from Ferrandini’s personal collection and was sold with previously unpublished photos of the stuntman wearing the iconic costume on location.
The sable-colored fedora was an updated version of the original hat featured in the first Indiana Jones film, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, with a “more tapered” crown. Created by the Herbert Johnson Hat Company in London, the inside lining features gold monogrammed initials “IJ”.
In addition to the Indiana Jones hat, other items of movie memorabilia were also sold at the auction, including an imperial scout trooper helmet used in the 1983 Star Wars film Return Of The Jedi, a light-up wand used by Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban, and a suit worn by Daniel Craig in the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall.
Brandon Alinger, Propstore chief operating officer, expressed pride in connecting fans with these historic pieces they cherish. The auction house’s success was evident as the Indiana Jones hat fetched more than double the price of another Temple of Doom fedora auctioned in 2021, according to Hollywood Reporter.
