Former President Trump Earns Approval from Republican and Independent Voters in Response to Biden’s Immigration Claims
During the CNN Presidential Debate on Thursday night, former President Trump appeared to earn significant approval from Republican and independent voters in a Fox News Digital focus group. The focus group was reacting to President Biden’s claims about immigration and the two presidential contenders’ sparring over their immigration policies.
When asked by CNN moderator Jake Tapper how he plans to curb the record-high numbers of illegal immigrants crossing the border, Biden referenced Congress’ bipartisan border package and criticized Trump’s previous policies of separating families at the border. Biden claimed that since he changed the law, there has been a 40% decrease in illegal border crossings.
However, Republican and independent voters in the focus group gave low approval to Biden’s remarks. When Trump responded, their approval shot up, indicating support for the former president’s positions on immigration. Trump criticized Biden for opening up the border and allowing individuals from prisons, mental institutions, and terrorist organizations to enter the country.
While Democratic voters in the focus group gave high marks to Biden’s remarks, their approval dropped significantly during Trump’s rebuttal.
Overall, the focus group reactions highlight the stark divide in opinions on immigration policies between supporters of Trump and Biden. The debate showcased the contrasting approaches to border security and immigration reform that continue to be major issues in American politics.
