Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes, known for popularizing bossa nova and samba with Western audiences, has passed away at the age of 83, his family confirmed. Mendes, who recorded more than 35 albums and received an Oscar nomination in 2012, was best known for hits like Mas Que Nada and The Look Of Love.
Born in Niteroi, Brazil, Mendes initially studied classical piano but found his passion for jazz after hearing a Dave Brubeck record. He formed the group Brasil ’66 in the USA, blending Western melodies with Brazilian rhythms to create a unique sound that captivated audiences worldwide.
Throughout his career, Mendes collaborated with artists like Carlinhos Brown and Will.i.am, incorporating elements of hip-hop into his music. He continued to perform live until very recently, spreading joy and celebration through his music.
Mendes leaves behind a remarkable musical legacy that spans over six decades. His wife, Gracinha Leporace, who sang on many of his records, and his five children survive him. The world has lost a true musical legend, but his joyful spirit will live on through his timeless music.
